What is chronic/congestive heart failure?

Heart failure means your heart is unable to pump sufficient blood to meet the body’s needs. It does not mean the heart has failed or stopped working completely!

There are two broad types of heart failure:

1. Right-side heart failure, where the heart can’t pump enough blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen.

2. Left-side heart failure, where the heart can’t pump enough oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body.

What can cause Heart failure?
  • Heart attack
  • Heart valve defect
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Congenital heart disease (birth defect)
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • High blood pressure
What are its symptoms?

Common symptoms of heart failure are:

  • Fluid buildup in lungs which can cause dry cough  .
  • Tiredness: Less blood to your major organs and muscles makes you feel tired and weak.
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeats: To make up for the reduced pumping power, the heart beats faster. This can cause rapid or irregular heartbeats.
  • Fluid built up in the lungs makes you feel breathless.
  • A weak heart pumps less blood to your kidneys, some of the water which you would lose as urine is retained in the body. This fluid retention causes swollen feet, swollen abdomen and even weight gain.
What is Met value or VO2max?
  • Heart pumps oxygen-rich blood to fuel your body.
  • VO2 max is the maximum oxygen you consume while exercising.
  • A VO2 max of more than 35ml/kg/min signifies good health.
  • Your MET value shows the energy your body requires during exercise. It is related to your VO2 max value.
  • These values are calculated from your Stress Test.

  • Dilates blood vessels reducing the load on heart.

Thoracic drip: Medicated decoction poured slowly over the heart region.

  • Reduces breathlessness on exertion by improving blood supply to the chest muscles.

Per Rectal Drug Administration: Medication through the rectal route (for quick effect)
