What is ischaemic heart disease (IHD)?

Your chances of developing IHD increases if you have  any of these:

  • High blood pressure.
  • High cholesterol.
  • Diabetes.
What are its symptoms?

IHD can present with the following symptoms after exercise or activity:

  • Chest pain (angina)
  • Jaw pain
  • Left-hand pain
  • Upper back pain
  • Heaviness in chest
  • Choking sensation in throat

Some people experiencing IHD may have no symptoms (silent ischaemia).

What can having ischaemic heart disease lead to?

IHD can increase your chances of getting a heart attack and/or developing heart failure.

What are some basic precautions to be followed for managing ischaemic heart disease?

Adopting a healthy lifestyle is the first step for managing ischaemic heart disease. Here are some tips you can follow:

  • Change your cooking oil after every two or three months
  • Avoid over heating of oil while cooking food
  • Exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week
  • Quit smoking
  • Lose excess weight

During stress test, at some point of time you start the stress test, your heart stops getting enough oxygen. This is the time of ischaemia (TOI) as indicated on your
ECG.
